Hunting down the elusive rainbow is difficult at best, but in Hawaii, the odds are in your favor because of tradewinds blowing patches of clouds with water in them along about the islands. The clouds like to gather in valleys where the sun can shine through them, producing sometimes spectacular rainbows. Usually you see the best ones while you're driving 60-70 mph along one of the multi-lane highways. Or it's at a time when you don't have film in the camera and by the time you load it the sun has shifted, the rains have moved, and all that's left is a faint reminder of the once proud rainbow.

Despite the hardships, we've managed to capture on film several prime examples of rainbows. Still trying to get a shot of a rare double rainbow, where you see a bright one in the foreground and a dimmer one somewhat behind it.

0301237—Sadly, we left the wonderful Rainbow State without my getting the elusive Hawaiian double rainbow against the butterscotch sun-colored rain clouds. However, we did get a double-rainbow in Ohio in 2001. And now, I've finally gotten around to updating this page to include it. It was originally—and still is—on our cross-country journey page.
